Homocysteine
Provided by Individual Wellbeing Diagnostic Laboratories

Homocysteine is a substance produced as they body digests protein. A certain amount is required but excess homocysteine is linked to heart disease and stokes. In addition, many people have a mild genetic defect that affects the pathway of homocysteine metabolism. Knowing your homocysteine levels can be of clinical benefit because elevated levels may result in a deficiency of certain nutrients and low nutrient status may lead to increased homocysteine levels.

The homocysteine test is a blood test that needs to be taken at the laboratory. Fasting is required 6 hours prior to the test. This test involves having a blood sample taken at the lab.

Other tests that are of benefit for assessing heart health include cholesterol (HDL, LDL, VLDL, triglycerides) and glucose. For further information or to order a test, contact Rob Clark.
