About Nutritional Therapy
Nutritional Therapy is a means of achieving optimum health and wellbeing by making dietary changes and by the appropriate use of supplements. People may visit a nutritional therapist for a variety of reasons. Your goal may be to lose weight, solve your digestive problems, address hormonal problems or to fuel yourself for sporting events. Whatever your aim, individually tailored dietary advice will help you to achieve your goals.
Visit the conditions section of this website to find out how nutritional therapy can help with your problem.
The consultation
Prior to the consultation you will be asked to fill in a detailed health and lifestyle questionnaire and a three-day food diary. This will be discussed during the consultation. A nutritional assessment is then made, sometimes with the help of appropriate laboratory tests. Dietary and lifestyle changes will be recommended. Vitamin, mineral, herbal or sports supplements may be recommended depending on needs. Please note that you may be asked to seek medical advice to investigate any underlying disease.
If you are taking any medications or supplements it may be helpful if you bring these along with you. You may also want to bring along the results of any recent medical tests.
When completing the food diary please write down what you would normally eat over two weekdays and one day during the weekend. Please state the portion sizes, and include as much detail as possible e.g. jacket potato (large) with butter, handful of grated cheese, tomato and lettuce rather than just jacket potato. Also include all drinks.
How many visits will be required?
Some people may only require one or two visits; these will usually be people who only require a nutritional "tune up". However, some people, perhaps, with chronic illnesses may require more visits. After the first consultation a follow up consultation is usually recommended two weeks later.
