Female Hormone Health
Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate body functions. For women, the correct function of the sex hormones oestrogen, progesterone and the fluid balancing hormone aldosterone, can play an enormous part in all aspects of health. The primary hormonal disturbance in PMS is that oestrogen levels are elevated and progesterone levels are reduced. This can lead to low levels of serotonin (a feel good neurotransmitter) as well as impaired liver function, low endorphin levels (pain relieving substances) and increased aldosterone secretion (responsible for oedema). In addition, fluctuations in insulin, thyroid and adrenal hormones caused by stress, low nutrient status, caffeine, sugar, saturated fats and little exercise may have a knock-on effect.
Unfortunately, the modern diet is typically low in fibre, vitamins, minerals, essential fats and healthy proteins. It also tends to be high in artificial hormones, traces of pesticides and additives causing many women to suffer extreme PMS and believing this to be 'normal'. Correct hormone regulation should mean at least a reduction in symptoms such as bloating, cravings, tension, mood swings, headaches and irritability. Further to this, imbalances of oestrogen and progesterone, can contribute to osteoporosis, breast cancer, infertility and cardiovascular problems.
