Food Allergy and Food Intolerance
There are two main types of allergy, type A which involves IgE immune reactions and type B allergies which are often referred to as intolerance. Type A is the classic allergy, such as a peanut allergy, and an immediate reaction takes place - these types of allergy are fairly rare.
Type B allergies are delayed reactions and are often referred to as food intolerance. The reaction time can be anything from between several hours to several days. Food intolerance can lead to a variety of symptoms such as weight gain, bloating, skin problems, joint pains, fatigue, headache, digestive complaints e.g. IBS, hyperactivity and excess mucous.
The best way to determine if you have food intolerance is to take a test called the Food Allergen Cellular Test. Foods, which cause problems, can then be eliminated from the diet. It would appear that type B allergies can develop due to poor gut function therefore this aspect is always considered by the practitioner. Dietary changes and supplementation can then be recommended to assist with gut healing. Type A allergies usually have to be avoided for life but type B foods can be reintroduced after a period of elimination and gut repair.
